Mantes - 1898
Artist: Albert Lebourg
This is an impressionistic watercolor painted in 1898. This well-known artist is a Frenchman who lived from 1849-1928. I bought this painting from a friend who owns a gallery near my apartment. The reason I bought it was because my country home in Gressey, France was very near Mantes and I used to spend a lot of time in this city. There’s a sad story about this watercolor. I had just purchased it and hung it on the wall in my Paris apartment. I always have my watercolors, original inks, and pastels reframed with museum-quality acid-free backing and good solid frames so that they can last for years to come. But before I could get this painting reframed, I went on a trip in October 2000 and didn’t get back here until January 2001. Shortly before I returned, this picture literally fell out of the frame onto the floor and the glass landed on top of it and damaged it. When I came back I was just sick that this one hundred-year-old plus painting was damaged. But thanks to my wonderful framer I was able to find a woman who does restoration and she has restored the painting so that the damage is barely noticeable. It has now been reframed with the proper backing and a secure frame.
