African Musician - Cameroon
Artist: Abassla
This is a wonderful painting of an African musician playing the balaphone. The balaphone is a musical instrument really unique to Western Africa. It’s played with mallets of wood or rubber and it produces very rich notes. I fell in love with the African music when I was posted to the Embassy in Cameroon from 1967-1969. Some friends that I met there and I would go out and listen to the African music and we’d dance. The music is called Hi Li music and the balaphone is one of the prominent instruments that’s played in this West African nation. When I left Cameroon in 1969 a friend of mine had a dinner party for me, a going away party in the garden of her home. The big surprise was she brought a little African orchestra to play. There were several balaphone players in this little orchestra so it was a lot of fun. I loved it. Of course, loving that music, I saw this painting and had to have it. I’ve met the artist but I don’t recall too much about him.
