Mother and Child
Artist: Amandos Akanaev
I was assigned to our Embassy in Almaty, Kazakhstan, for three and a half months from January to April of 1998. One day, I went to the Central State Museum with my friend, Ellen Rose, when I saw this painting and I loved it. I met the artist at the exhibition which was sponsored by the government and Conoco oil company. The artist needed money for an emergency operation which he subsequently had in Israel. I last heard he was doing very well. Mr. Akanaev provided me with the following description of the painting:

“Mother and Child is a combination of the traditional culture of nomads and personal research. The woman wears a traditional headdress called a ‘kemeshek’ and this gives the effect of an icon. The main idea of mother and child is taken from the Bible but this idea is common to all people. The face of the woman expresses the sadness of a mother who knows how difficult and thorny life is and how it will be for her child. But the sadness comes together in a feast of colors, ornaments of the clothing, and the design of the bridle to create an elegant rider.” ~Amandos Akanaev

It’s a lovely painting and it’s the first one that I donated to the Ellsworth College Foundation. It’s a fabulous addition to the collection.
